Outreach Effort Underway to inform Heard County's

Low-Income Families and Individuals about Nutrition and Food Stamp Program Purchase Power

The Food Stamp Program helps people with little or no income buy nutritious food. Food Stamp benefits are not cash. They come on an electronic card that you use like a bank card to buy food. Most grocery stores take food stamp benefits. You want the best for your family. You want everyone to stay well and for your kids to grow and learn. Using food stamp benefits to purchase healthy foods for your family can help make this happen. T

ry these tips to help your family eat better and stay healthy: Vary your vegetables.dark green, orange, peas and beans. Focus on fruits. Choose fresh, frozen, canned, or dried fruit. Eat at least 3 ounce of whole-grain cereal, breads, crackers, rice, or pasta every day. Choose lean meats and milk products that are lower in fat. Make physical activity a regular part of your day.

The Food Stamp Program is a win-win for our community - for both residents and retailers. Funded with federal dollars, each $5 in new food stamp benefits generates almost twice that amount in economic activity for the community. For a household of four, the average benefit is about $200 a month.

Research shows that low-income households participating in the Food Stamp Program have access to more food energy, protein, and an array of essential vitamins and minerals in their home food supply.

If you or someone you know needs assistance in purchasing food for their family, please contact the Heard County DFCS office at 706 675.3361 for more information on how you can get an application. Heard County DFCS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Heard County DFCS 706 675-3361
